What is the strongest animal?

There's no single answer to "the strongest animal" because "strength" can be defined in many ways:

  • Absolute Strength (lifting capacity): Based on this, the dung beetle is a strong contender. Relative to its body size, it can lift many times its own weight. Other contenders in this category might include certain ants and termites.

  • Pulling Strength: The elephant is generally considered the strongest land animal in terms of sheer pulling power.

  • Bite Force: The saltwater crocodile has the strongest bite force of any living animal. The extinct Carcharodon megalodon (giant prehistoric shark) likely had a significantly stronger bite.

  • Muscle Strength (relative to body size): Again, insects like dung beetles and certain ants excel here. However, it's difficult to directly compare across species due to differences in muscle structure and physiology.

Therefore, claiming a single "strongest animal" is misleading. The "strongest" depends entirely on how you define strength. The dung beetle, for example, is incredibly strong relative to its size but wouldn't win a tug-of-war with an elephant. The elephant's strength is unmatched in sheer pulling power, but a saltwater crocodile can easily crush its bones with a bite.
